How to set up email on an Android phone

This guide explains how to add a WebhostingNZ email account to an Android phone.

Android phones may use different mail apps, such as Gmail, Samsung Email, or another mail app. The screens may look slightly different, but the settings are generally the same.

Before you start

You will need:

  • your full email address
  • your email account password
  • your domain name

Your email account must already exist in your hosting control panel before it can be added to your phone.

Recommended settings

Use these settings when adding your account manually.

Incoming mail

  • Account type: IMAP
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email password
  • Incoming server: mail.yourdomain.co.nz
  • Security: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 993

Replace yourdomain.co.nz with your own domain name.

Outgoing mail

  • SMTP server: mail.yourdomain.co.nz
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email password
  • Security: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 465
  • Authentication: required

Your outgoing server must use authentication.

Use the same full email address and password as the incoming server.

Step 1: Open your mail app

Open the mail app on your Android phone.

This may be called Gmail, Email, Samsung Email, or Mail depending on your phone.

Step 2: Add a new account

Choose Add account or Add new account.

If you already have an email account set up, open the mail app settings first, then choose Add account.

Step 3: Enter your email address

Enter your full email address and password.

Choose Manual setup if you are asked whether to set the account up automatically or manually.

Step 4: Choose IMAP

Select IMAP as the account type.

We recommend IMAP because it keeps your email on the server and is better suited when checking email from multiple devices.

POP3 is also supported, but it is usually not the best choice for phones or multi-device use.

Step 5: Enter incoming server settings

Enter the incoming mail settings.

Use your full email address as the username.

Set the incoming mail server to:

mail.yourdomain.co.nz

Use:

  • Security: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 993

Step 6: Enter outgoing server settings

Enter the outgoing mail settings.

Set the SMTP server to:

mail.yourdomain.co.nz

Use:

  • Security: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 465
  • Authentication: required
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email password

Step 7: Sign in

Confirm the username is your full email address, then enter the password for the email account.

Tap Sign in, Next, or Done, depending on your mail app.

Step 8: Check your inbox

Your phone should now check the mailbox and take you to your inbox.

If you receive an error

Please check:

  • the email account has already been created
  • the username is the full email address
  • the password is correct
  • the incoming server is mail.yourdomain.co.nz
  • the outgoing server is mail.yourdomain.co.nz
  • IMAP is using port 993 with SSL/TLS
  • SMTP is using port 465 with SSL/TLS
  • outgoing server authentication is enabled

If you still receive an error, please contact WebhostingNZ support and include the exact error message shown on your phone.
