Recommended email settings for IMAP, POP3 and SMTP

Recommended email settings for IMAP, POP3 and SMTP

You can use these settings to add your WebhostingNZ email account to an email app such as Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Gmail, Samsung Email, or another mail client.

Before you start

You will need:

  • your full email address
  • your email account password
  • your domain name

Your email account must already exist in your hosting control panel before it can be used in an email app.

Recommended option: IMAP

We recommend using IMAP for most customers.

IMAP keeps your email on the server and is better suited if you check email from multiple devices, such as a phone, computer, and tablet.

IMAP incoming mail settings

  • Account type: IMAP
  • Incoming server: mail.yourdomain.co.nz
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password
  • Security: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 993

Replace yourdomain.co.nz with your own domain name.

SMTP outgoing mail settings

  • Outgoing server: mail.yourdomain.co.nz
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password
  • Security: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 465
  • Authentication: required

Outgoing server authentication must be enabled.

Use the same username and password as the incoming server.

POP3 incoming mail settings

POP3 is also supported, but we generally recommend IMAP instead.

POP3 may download messages to one device and can make it harder to manage email across multiple devices.

If you specifically need POP3, use:

  • Account type: POP3
  • Incoming server: mail.yourdomain.co.nz
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password
  • Security: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 995

Important note about usernames

For incoming and outgoing mail, your username must be your full email address.

For example, use:

info@yourdomain.co.nz

Do not use just:

info

How often should my mail app check for email?

Please set your mail app to check for email every 2 minutes or longer.

If your device or mail app checks too frequently, the server may temporarily block the connection because it can look like abusive login activity.

Need help?

If your email app gives an error, please contact support and include:

  • the email address you are setting up
